What is it?

Sickness and absence management/reviews involves providing advice to employers/companies in helping their staff return to work after ill health and assisting them in the evaluation of their current sickness absence management policies/procedures.

Typically this involves employers referring an employee to see one of our occupational health physicians, although it can be for a variety of reasons including: long-term absence from work, repeated short-term absence from work or ill health but not necessarily absent from work. We can then advise on a suitable course of action which is viable for both the employee and employer.

Why do I need it?


It is recognised that careful management of sickness absence is an important part of maintaining the efficiency of any company. By ensuring your employees are returning to work, even in a limited capacity, you are making direct cost savings on sick pay and on the cost of temporary staff. In addition there are indirect costs which you can save on including retraining, loss of production, cost on workloads and lost orders/sales.

You are also protecting yourself from the cost of litigation as our advice to you will be within the parameters of the law. The legal issues surrounding the health and safety of employees are complex and can be difficult to get to grips with but we understand these and we will work with you to ensure you are not in breach of your health and safety obligations. It’s important to remember every employer has a duty of care to each and every employee.

How does it work?










On receipt of your referral form we will arrange an appointment for your employee with one of our Occupational Health Physicians. We work to a series of key performance indicators and we ensure we keep you informed during every step of the referral process and provide you with regular feedback. After the consultation you will receive our report which outlines our advice and recommendations to you; we can also provide further advice on any aspects of the report as required.

We support case conferences between HR, employees and Trade Unions to ensure that all parties have an input into a safe and efficient return to work plan.

By having in-depth consultations, we are able to provide you with reports that outline our advice in a clear and useful manner. The reports give you detailed information regarding the medical, work and social aspects of the case and give advice on the outlook for the future.

· Typically, you refer an employee to Healthier Business using our referral form either online or by fax/post, outlining the employee’s sickness history and job role. The form will provide you with a list of questions which will enable us able to clarify your employee’s fitness for work.
· Its also important that you send us a current job description again this can be done online or by fax/post.
